Watching an old black and white movie

in which it’s raining

upon empty parking lots between tall buildings,

I think of James Cagney,

shoulders hunching up against the rain,

walking across the lot. No music whatsoever,

just the rain, the emptiness,

Cagney hunching up his shoulders,

his little eyes darting everywhere,

taking everything in—

a little Buddhist monk

clutching his robe to his throat

as he walks through the rain.
