The Zen Master’s Breakfast

Why do so many Indian words

sound, in English, like breakfast cereals?

Samsara,

Ninanes,

Shandhas.

Samsaras—existence to existence,

the breakfast of champions.

Ninanas—twelve lives in one, plus bananas.

Shandhas—five essential ingredients,

add milk. A fruit, if you dare.

Each morning

I take a box of Samsara

or Ninanes

or Shandhas

from my cupboard

and spill its bright grains

into my cereal bowl.
